When users are online, antivirus software (AV) wasn't always a big deal but with the amount of traffic online at this present time, it is a must. I highly recommend the AV software because of the common crime of identity theft. With the social networking boom, sites like MySpace and Facebook make it all too easy for a user’s identity to get stolen. I feel this way mainly because when a users (myself as an example) registers for a site to socialize, they don't take the time to read the fine print and make sure their personal information is kept private. Please take time for this to prevent any future problems. With safety as the next part to a users' security risk, please be careful. MySpace was given a dark shadow as being a breeding ground for sexual predators about two years ago. In education and as a technology instructor that set us back tremendously. I attribute that negative light to my retarded growth and experimentation in this Web 2.0 movement. Not to say there isn't any validity to the allegations but user's must be careful when socializing online. The same etiquette as is given in real life should be taken online. It is challenging but with great privilege comes great responsibility.
Your opinion and ideas about the technology are what is most important - along with your understanding and presentation of the technology. As an educator, moving myself, students I interact with, parents, the administration and my colleagues into the social networking zone of Web 2.0 is challenging for many reasons. Notably because of trust. Trust that this is really where the future is. Trust that students won't take advantage of it. Trust that we won't be able to catch up with the students.
All I can say is that change is already upon us and if we don't embrace it and work with it, it will overtake us.
